When Jihei, a paper merchant, fails to free his courtesan lover Koharu from her five-year contract, they decide to commit shinjū together. However, their plan is foiled when Koharu's samurai client intervenes and Jihei's brother reveals himself, leading to a series of events that ultimately lead to Jihei's downfall.
