When a disgraced Red Army locomotive driver, Ignat, is sent to a Siberian labour camp as punishment for his reckless past, he must work with a young German woman, Elsa, to repair an abandoned steam engine and escape the brutal commissar, who seeks to punish her for being a 'German' in post-war Soviet Union.
