When a mugger kills his fiancée in 1899, Dr. Alexander Hartdegen, an inventor devoted to pure research, builds a time machine to save her, only to find that any attempt leads to her death through other circumstances. Trapped in the future with primitive humans, he must rescue a woman he grew close to while accepting he cannot alter Emma's fate.
